Our First Texas Stops

January 9-12, 2017
Pittsburg, Texas

Texas is a really big state. We have several friends who live here, and originally I thought we could make a couple stops and see all of them. Uh, no.....

With our delay in Louisiana there are a couple we won't get to see this time :-( The first stop is to visit two sisters we went to school with.

Our Monday morning drive is much warmer than the last one. Bill finds us a route off the Interstate so we can enjoy more of the Texas countryside.

Barefoot Bay Marina RV Park is on Lake Bob Sandlin in the northeast section of the state. I know our site number, but there are no signs so I make two loops before finding it near the highway. Normally not a problem but the interior roads are horrible, rutted, full of holes, steeply sloped - the worst we've encountered. Mostly seasonals, not well-maintained, but it was voted best campground in northeast Texas for 2016 so I'm sure it's fine for our two nights.

We meet Paula and her mom and husband, David, for late lunch in town. Paula was the year ahead of me in high school, and a dear friend. As always, it's like no time has passed (it's been 30+ years since we last saw each other), and we enjoy a couple hours getting caught up. And of course I fail to get a photo - here's one from FB :-)

David and Paula - aren't they so cute?
Tuesday morning we sleep late and meet Pam and her boyfriend, Bobby Joe, for lunch near her home in Mt. Pleasant. Pam and Bill were in the same class, although she graduated with me, a year early. Always a lot of fun, we have a good time getting caught up with Pam and getting to know Bobby Joe.

After a couple hours hanging out back at our place, they take us for a ride around the lake, sharing history and stories. Both Paula and Pam were born in Pittsburg and are fourth generation. It's always great to see an area through eyes who have known it so long.

Pam and Bobby Joe - we had a great visit
We stop at this pretty little church - Reeves Chapel United Methodist

Grandpa is buried in the cemetery next door, not pictured.

It feels like Texas here.

We return as the sun sets on the lake.
Our Wednesday drive is only 75 miles, and Bill finds a route that gets us onto some nice country roads. Like everywhere we've been, Texas looks different from any other place.

Quinlan, Texas is the home of our friend Mike. He was Bill's first friend when he moved to Eagle Mountain - 51 years ago! He's working so we plan to see him the next day.

Sunset Resort is another lakefront location, this one on Lake Tawakoni. A nice park in the trees, it's a snug fit, but our back yard is lovely. FHUs with 50 amp, no table, no fire pit, level dirt.

Mike comes to visit Thursday morning before we go meet his girlfriend, Marlena. After a very yummy lunch in nearby Wills Point, the four of us return to our sweet spot on the lake. Mike lives just down the road, also near the lake, but his pups are not "particularly friendly", so our place it is!

Another great visit - we just love Mike. And Marlena is wonderful. We look forward to seeing both of them again.

It's so nice to have a couple warm days to enjoy our sitting area with Mike and Marlena

With a wonderful water view

Our warm weather is gone Friday morning, replaced by cold wind. But we're heading to Dallas to see Cowboys' stadium so there's no delay. For Bill, we're off to see hallowed ground :-))))

  1. Did Paula and Pam move back to their 'home city' after high school? It's always interesting to find out where classmates have come from or moved to. I'm still friends with only a handful of people I went to school with, but it's fun when we can spend time with them again. Great spot on the lake too :-)

    1. Pam moved back first, then Paula years later. We've now visited 40+ former classmates all over the country and it really is fun to hear how they ended up where they are now.

  2. Loved the sunset! You'll have to let me know how Dallas is.. its one the few places we may relocate to. Safe travels! Hugs and love!

    1. Lots to do here in Dallas - art, museums, history, recreation, sports, entertainment. We only had yesterday in the cold fog to check out a few things, but it's pretty cool. Nashville is still our favorite city, but nothing wrong with Dallas.

  3. Now you're in our old stomping grounds. We've spent many nights around Lake Tawakoni.

  4. "Texas is a really big state..." You are hilarious! Texas goes on FOREVER. We've criss-crossed Texas many times on our way to and from Florida, and we always have fun. Even with all of the time we've spent there, we still haven't seen everything we want to see. (Do you have friends in every state? And just think, you're making more all the time....:-))

    1. We've seen over 40 high school friends since hitting the road - not counting our reunions :-) Seems like they're everywhere!

  5. Can you imagine if Texas were to secede, Jodee? Half of the U.S. economy would go with it! It's huge!

It's so cool you keep in touch with friends from back home. 😃

  6. Texas is not a place I'm anxious to see again. You must be about through your classmates for visits! I am impressed that you know where they all live. Looks like nice visits with friends. Great waterfront spots!!

    1. After last night's tornadoes I'm less excited about seeing much more :-))) We've actually missed several of them due to timing, but after tomorrow there's no more "new" old friends for awhile. Bill, of course, has a spreadsheet of where they are!

  7. I'm impressed too with so many classmates and that you've stayed in touch for so long. Have to laugh at your stadium "hollowed ground". Love it that you two have such a shared passion. The lakes look lovely but if Barefoot Bay was voted best in NE Texas and the roads are so terrible that says a lot about any other campground around. I always wonder voted best by whom! Safe travels on your way!!

  8. Texas is Huge. Drove across it once and felt like months. I love how you're getting to catch up with old friends along your travels. Bonus staying along these lakes.

  9. What a beautiful site by lake. It's so cool all the friends you are reconnecting with. That's a pretty picture of the church silhouette and dusk sky....

  11. The best benefit I think of this lifestyle is the reconnecting with old friends. I went to a huge school but have kept track of the ones I was closest with, thanks to FB. When we cross paths with one of them we make sure and stop in. TX is huge and diverse, there are some real beautiful rv parks in the state and some great state parks.

    1. Our friends have determined our route here so we'll miss some great places we'll have to come back and see. FB has been great for us to find and keep in touch with our classmates.
