Between the Rain Drops

June 7-11, 2017
Depoe Bay, Oregon

Just down the road from our RV park of the same name is the Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area. It's a beautiful spot where the creek enters the ocean across a dark sand beach. Large basalt formations stand strong against crashing surf.

We stay and watch the wonder that is mother nature making magic on a partially cloudy day.

Fogarty Creek

Passing under Hwy 101 to the beach.

Reaching the great Pacific Ocean.

The surf reaches for the creek.

Fascinating to watch the ocean push back into the creek at high tide.

Happy, happy dog :-))

The rain moves in and out during our time in Depoe Bay. We get out to see more of the natural beauty, and take in the nearby small towns. We learn some local history, and see some seals. We enjoy long coastal views, and thick forest glimpses. We take naps.

Boiler Bay

A pod of seals, only visible with zoom.
Devil's Punch Bowl

The top of two sea caves collapsed, leaving this large cauldron in the rock.

The ocean side of the bowl.
Gull Rock

Otter Crest

Cape Foulweather

On March 7, 1778, the cape was the first geographic location named by Captain James Cook during his exploration of the northwest coast.
The rain catches us at Nye Beach.

Old moss and new growth in a foggy forest.

Clouds hug the tree tops.

The beach at Newport.

Yaquina Bay Bridge

Depoe Bay - the World's Smallest Harbor.
Our next stop is one we've looked forward to for two years - three weeks in a place we fell in love with after just one day.

    1. I told Laurel the same thing :-) It is fun to see a place we'll be in just a few weeks! There's a lot of beauty to enjoy on this coast.

  4. You certainly do experience various weather systems in one day here in Oregon. One afternoon during a two hour conversation John had with Kevin, he experienced sunshine, cloudiness, rain, and a severe hailstorm. Strange place! Love the Devil's Punch Bowl photo from above. Tessa is certainly enjoying her zoomie beach:) Beautiful coastal photos:)

    1. It's definitely not boring! We're learning that rain in the forecast rarely means the whole day. And while wet, we haven't had the cold you've had inland. No place makes Tessa happier than a beach to run on :-)))

  5. I love that a rainy forecast on the Oregon Coast doesn't mean rain all day. Keeps life interesting. :-) Wonderful photos of Depoe Bay, Yaquina Bay bridge, the crashing waves on the rocks, and the gorgeous view from Cape Foulweather! You guys have been busy! It's so much fun to see the coast through your lens. :-)

    1. Oh you must come see it - soon! While it is the visual opposite of the red rock desert, the blue and green wows are just as awe-inspiring!!

  9. Finally I have internet again so I can comment. Love your gorgeous pictures of the waves crashing against the rocks and the zoomie dog is definitely a keeper. Boiler Bay and Cape Foul Weather are both beautiful despite their ominous names. I think they should call that beach Seal Beach since there are seals there. No otters at Otter Crest and no Gulls at Gull Rock?? Looks like the rain didn’t spoil too much for you. Beautiful sites all around. Nice cliff hanger ending!

    1. We watched for otters, but no luck. Seems like there's gulls everywhere, but weirdly there weren't any on their rock :-)) The rain followed us but it's still wonderful where we are!!
