The Changing Pallet of Southern Arizona

 January 1 - 11, 2024
Tombstone, Arizona

Listed on several Arizona scenic-drive recommendations is the Sonoita-Patagonia Hwy. It's one that we often take as an alternative route to Tucson, and as the main route to Tubac and surrounds. If Jeff and I had taken it home from the airport we would have missed the deer-encounter!

Without good friends in Tombstone we would likely have looked seriously for a place in the Sonoita area as I love the broad views of golden grass and surrounding mountains. Home to many wineries, but few other businesses/services, the property prices have pretty much moved out of our range now. But we can still enjoy the area any time we want :-)

I've not usually been one for resolutions at the new year, but it is a good time to look at things I don't want to take into another year and/or those I want to add for the new one. Last year it was 50# that I'm happy I left behind. Now I realize I've been leaving my camera behind, relying on the simplicity of my IPhone, after we returned from the road. Since I really enjoy photography, and the options available with the "real" camera, it seems like a positive and easy change I can make going into 2024.

Put camera in Jeep - Check!

Jeff's caption: "Psyching himself up to go to work." :-))))

Ironically the one thing that my camera doesn't catch well is sunset colors. And January historically (4 Januarys are enough for "history" right?) has beautiful sunsets here. So the IPhone is called on again :-)

I never tire of the incredible drama our skies provide!

While we've been blessed with much less wind this year, it has been cold enough to appreciate it's really Winter. It looks like the storm that brought snow to the mountains of SoCal is going to miss us, but it arrives one late afternoon, altering our world.

Ezra and Elliott got "it" first.

Then here!

We love getting snow in the desert - always beautiful, and never lasts long. Just right!

There is the occasional inconvenience (when we forget to trickle the sink water overnight) of a hard freeze stopping our water for a few hours. Only happens once - we're fast learners.

While the snow is mostly gone on the second day, our north-facing front yard holds on to its blanket for a few more.

I'm always hearing horror-stories about dealing with insurance companies, so when I changed from Progressive to save money a few months ago I was concerned any claim would be a nightmare. The deer-strike on the Jeep means finding out if Esurance is going to be a mistake.

They're great!

Based on my pics and online claim they send me an estimate in 24 hours. Then the body shop quickly points out how optimistic my assessment was of "just a fender and a hood latch", noting several issues my untrained eye didn't catch. The estimator is leaving for a week so I expect that our Friday-at-5PM appointment will yield an updated estimate when he returns. Instead I have an email that night with a copy of the report he's sent to the insurance company before he left!

Two days later I get a call from the shop. Esurance has approved the estimate, parts will take 7-10 days, do I want to proceed? You bet I do!!

That night I get an email confirming the shop has been paid, less our deductible. Once again I'm amazed at how painlessly dealing with an insurance company and repair shop can be. Of course the Jeep isn't fixed yet :-))

Bill is finally on a regular schedule for his MWF treatments so we can plan around them much easier. He continues to feel about the same, getting used to the routine.

I'm still enjoying Tuesday craft days, trying new "creative endeavors", visiting with fun women.

Needle felting wall hanging - yet to be framed.

My first attempt at weaving on an embroidery hoop. Kinda fun!

Rebecca and I have been blessed with perfect weather on each of our day trips - to places where we're mostly outside. Our latest trip is to Tucson for massages and lunch at a new place - all inside. And the weather is nasty!! 35 mph winds, sleet, small hail, 42 degrees. Of course any day with a massage is a good one.

Cold weather makes dinosaurs hungry!

Small hail swirls and dances around us on the Interstate.

Discount Tires has rotated all the tires and put the spare back to the holder free of charge, and I wired the hood shut. But the high side winds are stronger than my temporary fix that breaks about six miles before Rebecca's place on our return from Tucson. I'm able to limp along the side of the road, and back at their rig Michael braves the brutal cold wind to add stronger wire to the broken latch. Good to go again!

Still chilly, the snow is gone, and the neighbors have come for a visit.

Henry having fun with his daddy.

Ezra and Elliott are excited about their new big bucket of Legos.

  1. Grands are the best! Jm is also a huge Lego fan.
Your iPhone takes great pics! I'm in need of a new camera and thinking perhaps a phone with a really good camera might be the better choice.
Snow, Hail ??? Sure is pretty in your yard :)
Glad to hear you're so far quite satisfied with Esurance, hope that continues and the Jeep will quickly be repaired.

    1. You have a great eye for photos Jodee or maybe its that we just love the same things...either way, I do enjoy your photos. I have a big camera with a big zoom in lens that I haul around for birds, other wildlife and flowers, etc., but most of my photos are with the phone. I can't believe the snow we have had...Sally and I love snow...and I am sad we missed it. Fingers crossed for more before we head into spring. The desert sure need it. The scenic drive you take is also a favorite drive we take sometimes...just because ! Your felted wall hanging is gorgeous. Did you use one of your photos as a guide? I love the colors from the shades of grays to the shades of green and all the colors in-between. And the scene is one we (as full-time RVers) have seen so many times. There is nothing any better than a bucket of legos...Ezra and Elliotts happy faces say it all! And the dinosaur, well, next time I pass it on the corner of Tanque Verde and Grant, I'm sure I will laugh out loud! The amazing Arizona sky is one of many things that drew us to the southwest to settle down. Great blog Jodee ! Oh, and congratulations on the 50#...that is totally awesome !

    2. The new phone cameras are so much better Jeff, you might be happy with that in lieu of a new camera! Fingers crossed the Jeep is done quickly.

    3. Of course you know where that dinosaur is Gay!! My felting was inspired by the many-layered scenes we've enjoyed and I've captured over the years. I'm delighted it evoked lovely memories for you too :-)))

  2. I know the words the road not taken mean a great deal to you at this point. Glad to hear your insurance experience was a good one. I was not so lucky. I've never heard of esurance but I'm going to look into it. Thanks. Boy those are definitely fantastic sunsets you get out there. Don't think the East can even come close. But you can keep the snow even for just a couple of days. I love your crafts and their colors. I can't even fathom losing 50 lb. I can't even lose 10. How DID you do it?

    1. Yes those words are very poignant now. Esurance is affiliated with Allstate and have been around for quite awhile. We did get a pretty awesome sunset when we were in Cedar Keys a few years back, but hard to beat Arizona. I use Optavia products for weight loss and maintenance and completely eliminated sugar.

  3. I took often leave my big camera behind. Why, I have no idea. It is not that cumbersome and takes great pictures.
The sunsets your iPhone too however, are awesome.
Good to hear your insurance claim is going well. We had two claims with State Farm last year that went very well.

    1. I'm remembering to bring the camera, now I just have to remember to use it! Glad you had good luck with State Farm as well. Gives us hope :-)))

  4. WOW! Fifty # is an amazing leave behind! So proud of you Jodee! Glad to hear Bill is hanging in there with the dialysis. Most of my photos are with the phone, I occasionally use the camera but also find it doesn't capture sunsets as my iPhone does. I love your needle felting--it's gorgeous!! Great job! And it's always good when things happen as they should--your insurance claim! That winter storm was amazing--so much wind!

    1. Thanks Janna, that felting was my first bigger project and I'm happy with how it turned out. I was thinking we might blow over to your house there for awhile!!

  5. Congratulations on your 50# leave behind....quite an accomplishment and hard won I'm sure!
We love the Sonoita area and looked at it seriously at one point also.

While I can appreciate how beautiful your little dusting of snow is to you and know how helpful any moisture is in this dry desert.....I just can't get excited about it! Too many years of months and months of it outside my window and the inconveniences it caused....sigh. That's just me though (and, well..... Dave too). Sunsets.....now that's something to get excited about! I agree, the phone does the best job. Since I got this new laptop, I haven't been able to figure out how to download the camera pictures and then find them again to share on the blog, so I've resorted to the phone exclusively. It does a decent job, but not for everything. Ah well.
Glad to hear Bill's schedule has regulated but I hope he won't have to get too used to it for long! Any word on other possibilities?
Your art work is really nice, it evokes scenes we all know and love.

    1. Snow is definitely and event rather than a dreaded season for me :-) Frustrating when those photos are hiding somewhere you've 'saved' them! No word yet on other options but they're still there :-)

  6. Congratulations on the 50!! Feels awesome doesn't it:) Very glad to hear Bill is doing well with his dialysis and you have a more set schedule. Being on the east side of the mountains we don't get many great sunsets. But we've had more clouds than normal and, therefore, more color. It's been great see color in both the AM and PM. Your photos are beautiful. Just our surrounding mountains got snow:( I do a little for a couple hours. I love, love that felt wall hanging. It's such a great scene and so colorful. Love the new weaving, too!! Thanks keeping up with grand photos. Love seeing the kiddos.

    1. It does feel great for sure - lots more energy too. I'm so happy how the hanging turned out just sort of winging it. Fortunate to have so many pretty memories to draw on. Amazing to see all those littles growing up so fast, grateful we get to see it happen through all their photos.

  7. One of the blessings of being at home is having the time to engage in creative projects. I'm so impressed with your felted wall hanging. And your weaving! I hope that adding a studio onto our tiny house will encourage me to settle down and create. Otherwise, it's just going to be a sunroom, LOL. Congratulations on leaving that 50# behind! So glad to know that Bill's treatments are going well. You two keep on enjoying those gorgeous sunsets!
