Sacrifice for the Cause?

If you read the last post you'll remember a funny looking ceramic cat wind chime. Something made by my kindergarten-sized fingers so many years ago.

Among a cadre of items with no other value than delightful memories, the cat made the cut through a life-time of purging. Still, how could I justify it as part of our new life on the road?

Friday morning I was surprised to see a short, empty cord hanging on the patio. On the bricks below I made the "grisly" discovery.

Bye-bye kitty........:-)

It seems that after all those years, all those moves, packed, unpacked, the cat took the decision away from me this time. The ultimate sacrifice? No desire for a vagabond life? A 50-year-old cord hanging in the sun??

In any case, one less item to consider. I don't see it as the beginning of a trend. No expectation of finding un-stuffed animals, or knitted hats returned to balls of yarn. There remain many decisions to be made.

Still, while my first reaction was sadness at the loss, that was quickly replaced by a sense of relief. Both at realizing I could certainly move forward without it, and that I had taken a photo of it.

All of we wise (old) adults know that there are lessons to be learned from all we encounter. Some are tough, some are scary, some have to be learned over and over. This one? Pretty simple.

  1. Oh no! We lost lots of stuff. Some broke and others I have no idea. Sometimes I wonder where it all went.

  2. Excellent idea to just take pictures of the beloved things and then whatever happens to them, and as our memories fade LOL, we still have them.

    1. I have to do a better job of labeling them - I'm finding so many I can't identify anymore :-(

  3. After almost two years on the road I am now wishing I had labeled individual photos so I could search for them easier. As it is, if I want to find a particular picture I have to remember approximately Where it was taken so I can go back to that particular stopovers folder (I have my photos in folders by the town and month/year we stayed there). Individual Keyword Tags on favorite photos would be helpful for digital searching. Food for thought...

    1. That is most excellent food - thank you! I will definitely look at doing that before we head out. You have so many wonderful photos, I can't imagine trying to find a specific one :-).

  4. I wish I had taken photos of more of our "stuff"....but alas, two years later....the memories will need to remain in my brain.

  5. Oh no, Kitty! Well, she had a good, long life. My only "old" possession I still have is my Tuffy Dog. He was given to me by my gramma in my hospital bassinet when I was born. He is more cotton now that all his "fur" has long been rubbed off. "He" still has the blue eyeshadow from a permanent marker long ago and the tattered ribbon around his neck. He will come with us. He's a young 52 ;-)

  6. Oh, no! Poor kitty! I fear the same fate for The Chicken, since she gets moved around a lot in the RV. I'm trying so hard to take care of her!
