One Last Stop on Hwy 395

Boulder Creek RV Park in Lone Pine was a great place for our nine day stay. FHUs with 50 amp, cable and good park WiFi. Very level dirt sites with some overhanging trees, fire pits plus BBQs, concrete patios and picnic tables at each site. Our satellite worked well, cell phone had four bars (AT&T). The staff are helpful and friendly, the small store well and smartly stocked. Good Sam and AAA discount.

It is a busy park but was never completely full. I was surprised by the number of people who arrived after dark and left in the morning. Hwy 395 and practicing fighter jets gave us occasional noise, but never enough to be annoying.

Friday morning we leave before 9:30. With strong tail winds we make it the 70 miles to Inyokern by 11:00 and find the El Solano RV Park. A Passport America park, it is mostly very old permanent mobile homes and trailers, and of the available sites only one doesn't have (smalltight trees on both sides.

It's quiet, clean, level, FHUs with 50 amp and fair WiFi. We only made this last stop for one reason (two, if you count my love of short travel days), and that is Red Rock Canyon State Park.

Saw it on our quick trip from Lake Tahoe in May, and knew that I wanted to stay nearby so we could spend some time there.  We're both glad we did.

We start at the Visitors Center

Archeological digs have yielded many finds in the area
Yes I jumped, and may have squealed a little, when I came around the corner!
A drive through the campground, down an OHV road, back to Hwy 14, into Red Rock Canyon, and a side trip in Tamarisk Grove/Red Rooster we enjoy the surprising color and beauty of this small state park.

On September 13 we left Spokane, WA, and began our Hwy 395 route. As promised by others before us, driving this highway in the fall is a must-do.

October 31 we turn onto Hwy 14, after 15 stops we are leaving Hwy 395 behind. Now that we've done it the first time, we'll take more than six weeks next time. So much to do, so much to see!

  1. I don't believe I've ever been on highway 14 in my many decades of traveling through California! Looks like a neat little spot you found.

    1. It's the artery from the Sierras through Antelope Valley to L.A. Traveled it several times, but never stopped at the park - so glad we did!

  2. It looks like you've done a mighty good job of checking out highway 395. There are many more highways for you to explore.

  3. Wow 6 weeks. It doesn't seem that long. Red Rock Canyon looks like a great place to hike. Any reason you didn't stay inside the park itself? I assume it has a campground.

    1. One of two sites might have fit our rig but those were very rough and slopped, decided not to chance it and just stay at the Passport America park. The campground does have beautiful views of the rocks :-)

Yes, this section of 395 from Lee Vining to Lone Pine itself needs more than six weeks!

  6. Isn't it amazing how many colors the layers of rock accumulate? You took some great photos. It looked like you had great weather for your journey too.
Ron and I would actually enjoy the sound of the fighters practicing. Although not as often since the base was privatized, but we occasionally hear and see jets taking off at nearby McClellan Park.

    1. Yes, out of a seemingly bland desert this amazing canyon just appears!

We thought they were cool too. Used to see them all the time when traveling through Imperial County south of Salton Sea - they are soooooo fast!!

  7. This is another place I'm adding to my growing list. Been at least 40+ years since I traveled 395. Gorgeous country.
