Figure I'd Better Check-in!

 September 21 - October 21, 2022
Tombstone, Arizona

Once we completed our mad dash across the country to arrive in Tombstone six weeks early the time has flown by. Nothing very exciting, just lots of errands that seemed to have grown into a mile-long list.

Top of that list is moving our healthcare from the safety and security of our HMO which I've had for forty years! Navigating the chaos that is Medicare Supplement Plans has been a nightmare that continues as we attempt to get Bill's plan finalized. It baffles the mind that we still have to go through all of this to have healthcare in this country.

Line at the pharmacy - hoping this isn't the new norm for us.

Two days before we left in April we picked up the motorhome from Camping World in Tucson where they had completed (allegedly) a list of fixes after having it for five weeks. Along our route we soon realized how many items either weren't done or that had already failed. Upon our return getting it back in to remedy these is also a priority.

I learn that they no longer service motorhomes - trailers only now - but they do finalize or redo anything they've already worked on. So three weeks ago we drop it off with assurances that all will be completed correctly in a couple weeks. It's still there. I have bragged about this Camping World (as have others) for years, but our experience this past year has shown they are no longer a quality shop. Even if they weren't doing motorhomes anymore I'm afraid we'd be moving elsewhere.

Fortunately everything else we've needed to get done has gone smoothly. Tessa has dental cleaning and minor surgery to remove a fatty mass under her leg, new glasses are ordered, Arizona drivers' licenses and license plates arrived, the three foot tall weeds are  knocked down in the large yard, and other life stuff that makes you feel satisfied when you can check them off the list.

Nice to be enjoying our sweet views again.

When we arrived we could barely see the back fence from the house.

A nice surprise are daily rain storms for the first three weeks. Most give us some wet here, and all surround us with thunder and lightening from massive dark cloud banks. It's been lovely!

Our daily dramatic skies.

Dear friends Rebecca and Michael return from their summer travels to their RV space in nearby Whetstone, and we immediately make plans to get together. Lunch out at Contessa Cantina is a real treat as we've been eating healthy at home. Back to the house for a few hours of getting caught up, and of course no pics.

Did manage to get a pic of the fun presentation of my stuffed potato at the cantina!

Another fun meet-up that also fails to produce any pics is a visit from Ron and Renee (R 'n R on the Road) who are returning to California from their busy working/playing summer. They were the first RVers we connected with back before we'd even bought the motorhome, before they bought their first trailer, and it's always special (never often enough) when we can get together. I'm so grateful she reached out while they were in the area!

M&M enjoying the cattle train at the local harvest fair.

Reese delighted with fall leaves in her new VA yard.

The youngest, Oliver, getting cuter all the time.

The oldest, Ezra, having a great time at his friend's Nerf party in the park.

Little brother Elliott joining in. Be afraid, very afraid :-)

We're making plans to get to SoCal to see the grandsons, then having our Kingman pals here for Thanksgiving. This year has flown by fast!

So we're doing well, Bill's big scare is behind us with him now a committed non-smoker, and moving a little farther out of the post-COVID fog each day. 2023's travel route is already being planned, as well as a few house projects to keep us busy this winter.

  1. Glad to hear that all is well in Tombstone. And congratulations to Bill!! We will be a little late getting to our place this year due to knee physical therapy but we will eventually arrive! As always, adorable grandkids!

  3. It's so good to hear from you and to know that all is well. :-) So glad that Bill is feeling better, and has stopped smoking. It's definitely a commitment to do all those things to be healthy, but SO worth it to be able to travel and do all the fun things for a long time to come! You really do have gorgeous views. And absolutely darling grandkids.

    1. These views really do make it nice when we come back from our travels! Being able to do those travels is a huge incentive to healthier habits.

  4. I wonder if health care is any easier anywhere. I know it's "free" in England Canada France and other places. It's not quite free here but to have to look into supplements and drug plans every single year is quite an ordeal. And then there is the charge for medicare and then there is the deductible. The insurance company must benefit in some way from all is it from all this complication. Wonderful to hear Bill has stopped smoking and is doing so well at it. The horribly overgrown yard is one of the biggest hazards of continuing to own a house that you visit a few months a year. Had the same problem myself this year so I can sympathize. Where do you think you will be going in 2023? I'm realizing I better start making reservations for next summer. So ridiculous!!

    1. I'm not even sure why they have people to answer the phones if none of them can answer basic questions about the application. So maddening! We did find a company we can schedule and pay online so we're hoping we can come back to cleared yards next year :-) Yes, I'm already looking at making reservations for the big weekends along our route.

  5. Hope you got your secondary insurance straightened out. Definitely not fun! We kind of lucked out with our PA retirement group offering a terrific secondary so we didn't have to comb through the masses. So very glad to hear Bill is recovering from his Covid side effects and still hanging in there with no smoking. Way to go Bill!! Boy the grands are growing up so fast. Time sure does fly.

    1. After so long with Kaiser it's a foreign world navigating healthcare options :-( Mine was pretty easy but Bill's is causing us more headaches. Watching those kiddos growing up so fast really makes the time fly even more!

  6. I gave up trying to figure out the supplemental plans and went to a broker. A bit of a cop out but easier. Good to hear that Bill is past the worst of the Covid symptoms and you both are enjoying being back home.
Such fun seeing the grands, they grow way too fast!

    1. I wish now that we'd done the broker, although I thought AARP would provide that service for us :-( Yep those babies are getting too big too fast.

    1. A view was really the only must-have when we started looking, but we never dreamed we'd find the perfect spot with 360 degree views! Like the grands, the list never seems to stop growing.

  8. Insurance....ugh We finally went with a broker years ago and so far so good! Glad to hear Bill is almost back to normal, better than normal really - without cigarettes! We were just talking about our 2023 travel plans too! No rest in our bones I guess! Hope to see you this year, here or there.....

  9. The whole Medicare thing is a nightmare. So much catching up once home from travels. Happy to hear Bill quit smoking, it got easier over time. Nice to have a home base with a view but I'm looking forward to the desert soon. Keep taking care of each other, for those cute grandkids.

    1. He seems to be doing well with the not smoking, but we've stuck close to home so hopefully that continues. Those kiddos are a great incentive for both of us!

  10. Barb will be dealing with Medicare next year and me a couple of years after that. We are not looking forward to that! Good to hear that Bill is getting better hopefully you both remain healthy and your rig gets fixed properly this time and remains that way as well!

    1. Sounds like going through a broker is the best way, AARP is not a broker. And avoid Medicare Advantage plans if you're going to be traveling the country. Otherwise, just good luck!!

  11. Yes, it was good to see you both too! I've been away from Blogger for awhile. Always seems to be the last thing on my mind lately... Great photos of your growing family <3

  12. OK, we are sitting still long enough to figure out the ‘why aren’t we getting OTRA notifications?’. Did not catch that Bill quit smoking…yay! I want him around a LONG time, as I am sure you do too, Jodee!
