Tombstone, Arizona
Getting out and about with my gal pals is the best. During our last adventure we made plans for a special day of holiday cheer and live theater. We have perfect weather, and both the vintage market and Moulin Rouge are wonderful!!

| Gathering continues to be the most wonderful holiday-feast-for-the-eyes, including a book tree this year. |

| This year I want a large piece for the open wall that won't have the grands' felt tree, and three winter sprigs for the wall vases - score!! |
Although construction eliminates several parking spots at the market, we find an easy space nearby. At the parking garage near the theater there are a handful of cars ahead of us, but we find a perfect spot on the third floor. It's a short walk past eateries and shops aimed at the university community that wraps around the theater and pretty park. At the theater our tickets are quickly scanned, no line, no wait to get to seats, easy peezy. Afterwards the exiting patrons move quickly, and when we arrive at the Italian restaurant we had picked out we're seated immediately. Even the food arrives quickly. It really adds to the perfection of a wonderful day when everything is this easy.

| Vicki, me and Rebecca. The production is incredible including gorgeous sets and lighting. The cast had us all cheering throughout. |
Other than that great day, it hasn't seemed much like Christmas this year. Not just the differences for us, but in most places I've been.
Rebecca and I make our annual trip to the little border town of Tubac the second week of December, expecting the usual holiday festiveness, even though it is in the high 70's. Not only no Christmas music, but almost no decorations yet. Some stores have bare trees out front with a string or two of lights, but ornaments still in boxes. Inside, there's minimal signs of the holiday. Weird.
Even at our favorite, beautiful and delicious, Elvira's, they have one corner with decorations, and the little shop has one table with holiday gift items. So weird.
A couple trips to meander Tombstone shops and still no Christmasness. The little tree is decorated on the street, and some windows are painted, but that's about it.
In Sierra Vista there's even less :-(
It takes longer than it should to get the brake assist removal scheduled for the Jeep, but it does get done, and the trade-in and purchase finally happen. There are things I will miss no longer having a Jeep, but I'm very happy with this little truck.

| I haven't named her yet, gotta spend more time driving around. |

| The dash screen is crazy, one never feels alone when no one else is in the cab! |
Attending the Tombstone Light Parade finally feels like Christmas has arrived. Join Vicky and her husband for early dinner then enjoy the parade from our camp chairs set up where we were last year. The amount of work put into these little, local floats and vehicles is impressive, and appreciated by the good size crowd that has turned out.

| There are several horses, this is our favorite. |

| Their sign on the back said "Have a MARVELous holiday!" :-))) |
![]() |
| Jeeps and ATVs were decked out. |
![]() |
| She moves so fast! |
![]() |
| Watching this giant navigate through the poles at the intersection is tense! |
![]() |
| The motorcycle pulling the boat is very popular :-) |
On the way home I'm happy to see many homes with holiday lights, and a great fireworks show is a fun surprise!
Jeff heads out on the 15th for Grand Rapids, MI. He picks up a friend in Denver, and they continue on to meet several other friends for the holiday. I know he'll have a great time.

| We had the fireworks and then the next evening the sky was on fire. Wow! |
![]() |
| Bill has been hearing the owl at night, and I finally see him as the sun rises one morning. |

| We usually do our own thing, but one craft day Rebecca treats us to a lesson on alcohol paint ornaments. We're all fans now! |
When we reach a "certain age" time is not always our friend. However, when grieving, that passage can be helpful and healing. More good days than bad, more happy from memories than sad.

So excited you are driving a Ford truck, Jodee! We name ours after members of the Ford family. My current truck is Hank the Deuce and the Escape is Edsel II. I’m sure you’ll think of the perfect name.
ReplyDeleteA fun tradition for sure!! We now have two Fords as well, and I have had so many over the years I can say I'm a Ford girl.
DeleteThere is Christmas in Arizona! Growing up in the north, we always had a hard time with a non-white Christmas, it just does not feel the same! Congrats on the new truck.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm liking her a lot. Even though I've mostly had non-white Christmases all my life, having a hot weather Christmas is really unseasonal. Those visiting here right now from cold places are of course loving it :-))
DeleteGood morning Jodee. I agree with you that Gather is a feast for the eyes at Christmas...so festive! I love the Mexican tree you posted. And I love your sleigh bells too. Everytime you post abut the theater, I say we have to make plans to go. What a fun way to spend a few hours. That is quite the parade Tombstone has. The girl on stilts is an eye catcher, but I love the horses too. I am so happy you saw your owl. I heard one just this morning in the pine tree behind our house, but couldn't find him. Owls have always been my favorite birds. It is so nice when the sadness of losing our pets slowly and miraculously changes to happy when we think of them. There is never a day that goes by that I don't think of Dover, Wrecks, Sally and Jack. Alcohol paint ornaments sounds very interesting. I hope you will show us one. And I sure hope Elliott"s letter to Santa was delivered! Merry Christmas Jodee and Bill!
ReplyDeleteYou really must see something at Centennial Hall when you can - they always have matinees and great productions. I'm a big owl fan as well, they're just so majestic and quirky at the same time :-) Merry Christmas to you and Joe and Lucy as well!!
DeleteThat is strange about Tubac. Love those small town lighted parades! Merry Christmas Jodee and Bill!
ReplyDeleteI agree the small town parades are really special! Merry Christmas to you three as well.
DeleteSo bummed. I just wrote a comment and somehow it disappeared. Let me see if I can resurrect it.
DeleteSuch beautiful Christmas trees! I never thought to do a close up of the tree like you did with those balls. I really like it. So glad to see you had such fun with your girlfriends. How about some pictures of those ornaments hat you guys made?
What an incredible light parade. I thought Tombstone was a small town but they really know how to do it up big. And sweet Tessa so great to see her. Merry merry Christmas to you all!!
Oh no! I hate when I lose one of mine. Glad you got this one to stick, I always love to read your comments :-) I'll for sure add a pic of those cool ornaments next post. The amount of work some of those locals put into their parade entries is amazing.
DeleteLove that Mexican Christmas tree! We're in the Palm Springs area right now and, believe me, there is no shortage of Christmas decorations here! Except, they look kinda sad in the pouring rain.....
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about reaching "a certain age" totally. a mixed blessing.
Cute truck but I'll always think of you in a Jeep! Happy Christmas to you and Bill
I'm sorta missing my Jeep identity while enjoying the new ride :-) I remember PS as going all out for Christmas so I'm glad they still are. This was the first time I've been at the market when they had a Mexican tree and lots of colorful holiday do-dads all around it. I loved it too! Wishing you and Dave and Taos a very Happy New Year.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about the lack of Christmas lights. Especially the second week in December. The BC populations really out did themselves this year. I feel badly that we are one of only a couple houses on our street without lights. But I appreciate all the other houses every evening for our after dinner mile. So festive. Sounds like a wonderful traditional Christmas outing with friends. We didn't make it to our town's electric light parade but these little towns do go all out. Your new truck is beautiful!! I've always been a truck girl. Enjoy!! Wishing you and Bill a healthy, happy New Year:)
ReplyDeleteWent to Bisbee on Christmas Eve and minimal decorations there too! Alternate universe in southern AZ for sure. We just have a single string on our front porch, but you can see them from way down the hill so I feel we did our part :-)) All the best for you and John in the new year!!!!
